‘Personal Posts’ won out on the poll I made last post, so I decided to give my morning and night routines out!
My morning routine
Like anything in life, this isn’t a set-in-stone thing, but there are a few things I do no matter what in the morning. A few other things I do if I wake up early, and others I may only have time for on the weekends.
I prefer the mornings to nighttime/afternoon. Waking up early starts my day off right and vice versa.
Right when I wake, I’ll wash my face and brush my teeth. If I have extra time, then I’ll use an actual face wash to wash wash my face. I’ve also been trying to drink water right when I wake up lately, because it’s said to be a good habit to get into. I’ll make my bed, get ready, and pop open my computer to get into my online meetings.
If I have in-person school(currently doing hybrid), it’s a little different. I usually wake up a lot earlier, to have time to get into the car and everything. I make sure all my homework/items are in my backpack, and set up a snack too. I like doing that in the mornings. I’ll fill up or grab a water bottle and put that in too. I’ll have breakfast- a bagel or a banana- and then I’ll be off.
If I have all the time in the world, usually just on weekends, a couple things are added on. I’ll do a full tidy up of my room. Sometimes, I like to brush my hair, but I usually do that only after I shower. I’ll write a to do list if neccesary and then get started with my day.
That’s usually all I do in the span of time I consider a morning routine. Mornings can be really hectic on school days, but I’m happy to get just half of my routine in.
My night routine
So, like my morning routine, my night routine depends on when I get to sleep. There are a couple things I do no matter what, as well as some things I do if I get to start at the ideal time.
The first thing I do, no matter what, is brush my teeth. Even if I’m doing other things after, I like to brush my teeth first so I feel like I can jump in bed at any time after that.
Something else I love to do is on a sticky note, I like to write my focus tasks for the day ahead. This is something I made up because it helps me to have something to look at the next day. I write down the main things to think about, ‘happy *insert day of the week*’ and put it at the front of my desk sticking on my computer. This lets me think about the day before it happens and sort of gives me a pre todo list.
Then, if I don’t have time for anything else, I put on lotion, set my alarms, and get to bed. The lotion is non-negotiable because I get really dry skin really fast, and the alarms…well I can’t risk not waking up, of course.
But, if I get the ideal time to do everything I want- which is about twenty to thirty minutes- there are a few more things I like to do before bed. Mainly, I like to journal or diary.
I consider these two different things.
When journaling, I like to jot down any worries I might have for an upcoming event, maybe find a journaling prompt, or write a poem based on my feelings. When using a diary, I like to recount the day’s events, and it’s more of a casual thing. Yes, these things happen in completely different notebooks. I never do them both in the same day, just because my hand starts to cramp after writing for a while. It just depends on my mood.
I also like to set out my clothes for the day coming. This switches between mornings and nights because sometimes I have no ideas and I know the idea will come in the morning, and other times I need to set it out, especially if there’s an important event coming.
I also enjoy meditating. Nothing special, I just pull up a 10 minute before bed video on my phone and follow along. If I’m super early, I’ll read, but that’s about all I get done before I call it a night.
Morning/Night Routines are just habits that develop over time, and they depend on what’s easy for everyone. If you’ve found something that sounds interesting enough to add to your own routine- great, do it! But just because these things work for me, it doesn’t mean they’ll work for you. I just wanted to share.
I’d love to hear your morning and night routines in the comments!
Side note– I’m going to be starting a post series of me trying organizational/study techniques and talking about whether or not they work. Use the poll below to vote for which of these two I should try/talk about first. (or give me your ideas- I’d love to hear them!)
Keep smiling! :))
